Turning 40 was a milestone that sparked a lot of introspection. I’m a Type A, risk-averse, “think ten times before doing once” kind of person—call it a blend of over-analysis and caution. As I neared that birthday, I realized I’d held myself back from fully living, opting instead for security and predictability.
I wanted that to change, so I made a ‘40 before 40’ list — 40 bucket list experiences to have before I turned 40. One item on it was simple in theory, harder in practice: Say yes to an experience without overanalyzing it.
That opportunity came a few months later when a colleague invited my husband, Jeff, and me to join her in St. Croix. Jeff looked at me and said, “This is it. This is your moment. Let’s go—and let me plan it.” So, I took a deep breath and agreed. We didn’t overthink it. We booked the trip, packed, and headed out for what turned into 16 days of spontaneous adventure.
We truly lived.
We went where the wind—and our friend—took us. We snorkeled with wild sea turtles, went scuba diving, got sunburned, and drove a Jeep through the jungle. It was definitely a bucket list experience, and yet it was so much more than just a vacation. We made memories to last a lifetime. But more than that, we lived.
More Practical Matters…
Could we have spent that money on something “practical” instead? Of course. We could have upgraded our car or redecorated our bedroom. But those things would eventually fade into the background, forgotten in time. This trip, however, left us with memories and stories that have transformed our lives and our marriage. Those memories, and the way that trip changed me, and changed our marriage… those will be with me until the end of my days.
